Estancia de los Rios: FAQ
Expert answers to common questions about Estancia de los Ríos, including fly fishing, accommodations, seasons, equipment, horseback riding, non-angling activities, and travel planning.
Fly Fishing
-
Estancia de los Ríos offers access to one of the largest private fly-fishing properties in Patagonia. The ranch encompasses approximately 445,000 acres and provides access to more than 100 miles of fishable water, as well as several secluded mountain lakes.
The fishery is centered on wild brown trout and is particularly well known for its dry-fly fishing opportunities. Guests can fish a remarkable variety of waters, including spring creeks, freestone rivers, mountain streams, and remote backcountry fisheries, all within a single property.
Because access is limited to lodge guests, anglers often enjoy exceptional solitude and low fishing pressure compared to many well-known trout destinations. In fact, it is not unusual for guests to spend an entire day on the water without seeing another angler other than their guide. In a world where many celebrated fisheries receive increasing fishing pressure, this sense of solitude and exclusivity has become one of the most valued aspects of the Estancia de los Ríos experience.
The combination of extensive private access, diverse fisheries, wild brown trout, and genuine solitude creates a fly-fishing experience that is increasingly difficult to find elsewhere in Patagonia.
-
Estancia de los Ríos is exclusively a wild brown trout fishery. The ranch encompasses an entire watershed and several tributaries of varying sizes and character, including rivers, spring creeks, mountain streams, and lakes, all of which support naturally reproducing populations of brown trout.
Because brown trout are the only trout species present, guests enjoy a remarkably consistent fishing experience focused entirely on wild fish. The trout thrive throughout the ranch's extensive network of waters and have adapted exceptionally well to Patagonia's diverse aquatic environments.
The destination is particularly attractive to anglers who enjoy sight fishing, dry-fly fishing, and pursuing wild trout in a remote wilderness setting with very low angling pressure. Many guests also appreciate the opportunity to fish a wide variety of waters en environments.
-
One of the defining characteristics of Estancia de los Ríos is the remarkable diversity of waters available within a single ranch.
Guests can fish spring creeks, freestone rivers, meadow streams, mountain creeks, smaller tributaries, and several remote mountain lakes. Each type of water presents its own challenges and opportunities, allowing anglers to experience a wide variety of fishing environments during their stay.
The ranch also maintains a comfortable cabin in a remote valley located approximately one hour from the main lodge. This outpost provides access to an entire watershed composed primarily of spring creeks and stillwaters that receive very little fishing pressure and are rarely visited by other anglers.
During the early part of the season, when water levels are typically higher, anglers may also float sections of the main river. Three different day floats are available.
This diversity allows guides to adapt daily fishing plans according to weather conditions, water levels, seasonal patterns, and angler preferences. Few destinations in Patagonia offer such a broad variety of waters within a single property.

Accommodations and lodge experience
-
The lodge features six double guest rooms and can accommodate up to 12 guests when occupied by a single party, family, or group traveling together. For independent bookings, however, the lodge manager generally considers the lodge full at approximately 10 guests. This approach helps maintain a comfortable atmosphere and provides additional flexibility when assigning guides, fishing waters, and activities.
The limited number of guests relative to the size of the ranch is one of the factors that contributes to the overall experience. With approximately 445,000 acres of private land and more than 100 miles of fishable water available, anglers can spread out across an extensive network of rivers, spring creeks, and mountain waters without feeling crowded.
Many guests are attracted to Estancia de los Ríos precisely because of the privacy, exclusivity, and solitude that result from combining a small lodge capacity with a vast and largely undeveloped landscape.
-
Guests stay in a comfortable lodge designed to provide a welcoming base for exploring the ranch and its fisheries. The lodge features six spacious double guest rooms, each with a private bathroom and beautiful mountain views. Generous common areas provide comfortable spaces to relax, share stories from the day, and enjoy the company of fellow guests.
In addition to the main lodge, guests have the option of spending one or more nights in a comfortable cabin located in a remote valley within the ranch. This outpost provides access to miles of spring creeks and several mountain lakes while offering an even greater sense of solitude and immersion in Patagonia's wilderness.
For those seeking a more adventurous experience, the ranch also maintains a tent camp beside two high mountain lakes that can be reached on foot or horseback. Spending a night at the camp allows guests to experience a remote corner of the property while enjoying access to fisheries that are rarely visited.
The combination of a comfortable main lodge, a remote cabin, and a wilderness tent camp allows guests to experience different aspects of the ranch without ever leaving the property.
